Montgomery Central High School

Continuing my exploration of Modernism in Tennessee, I present Montgomery Central High School!

First a little background - I did not know about this wonderful modernist construction before stumbling upon it while returning to Clarksville from Memphis - my brothers step-daughter married in Memphis last fall (2006) and it was while driving back to Clarksville to visit with my mother that this amazing set of buildings appeared - it was one of those near-mystical experiences. For some reason we decided to go a back road instead of driving all interstate (the state roads would swing us west of Nashville and almost due north to Clarksville). The drive was rather uneventful - overcast with little traffic and most public buildings were closed due to it being a weekend. It was rather amazing to suddenly see the school below - we basically turned a corner and there it was!

Like giant manta rays leaping from the water, or even better, Martian tripods ala "War of the Worlds" - the construction is quite breathtaking. Swinging around the back are some wonderful mushroom posts reminiscent of "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers." The entire original structure is truly spectacular.
This was built around the same time as the public schools in Clarksville - Clarksville High School has round structures with dome tops, New Providence Jr. High School has hexagonal pods interconnected, also Springfield High School is supposed to look similar to Montgomery Central only it's not constructed above water - I'll try to get images the next time I'm in the area.

Wonderful building. Who was the architect? When was it built?

Well, let me tell you something. I go to MCHS and trust me, it rains more inside the buildings then it does out. It is always leaking and the water from the water fountains is pumped from the pond. Yeah... gross. Not so glorified....

The roof leaks because it's so old, you idiot. Hence the reason they're mostly likely tearing it down and rebuilding. Are you ready to have just another ordinary block building? Such a shame.

I graduated from MCHS in 2005. I've always loved those buildings. I remember watching my friends climb up on top of the pods on several occasions but never being gutsy enough to do it myself. Lots of great memories at that place.

Being a current student at Mongomery Central High School i have been around to witness almost all of the renovations that the school has undergone. Even though we have lost the mushrooms, the school is still as origninal as it once was. We now have a brand new theater which is beautifully designed. MCHS has been the best experience of my life. I could not ask for a better high school.

The architect was my uncle, John Shaver and his company Shaver and Company based out of Salina KS. It was built about 1970

This post lives on!
MCHS opened in the fall of 1969. Springfield High in the next county to the east doesn't look at all like MCHS, but in addition to nearby Clarksville High, Cheatham County Central, in the county south of MCHS, are rounded and pod-like buildings from about the same timeframe.

THAT IS NOT A MODERN BUILDING ITS A RACIST COLLABORATION OF A SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT BUILT WIGWAMS ON WATER TO PLAY ALONG WITH THEIR INDIAN MASCOT AND THEIR 1960S COUNTRY MUSIC RACIST SCHOOL SONG OF KAWLIGA.

THESE ARE WIGWAMS ON WATER IN A STATE WHERE WIGWAMS NEVER EXISTED.
